안녕하세요. ReDI입니다. 지난 4월 12일에 네덜란드에서 온 아서가 연구를 마치고 학위를 취득하기 위해 출국을 앞두고 있습니다. 마지막 ReDI Talk를 통해 한국에서 일을 하게 된 이유와 개발 활동에 대한 사회학적 접근 방식, 그리고 무엇을 발견했는지 발표를 통해 그 동안 연구했던 것을 이야기해주었습니다. 또한 인터뷰를 통해 약 2개월 동안 ReDI와 함께 했던 소감을 전했는데요, 남은 시간까지 ReDI에서 좋은 추억을 만들었으면 합니다.
ReDI ReDI에서 주로 무슨 일을 하셨나요?
Arthur I mainly took part in research for a moment at ReDI, took part in meetings, and also helped some co-workers with translations issues. As the team was primarily focused on delivering project proposals all in Korean I sadly didn’t get the opportunity to help as much as I can but I always remained available and open to discussion. In the meantime, I was carrying my own research, and part of the ethnographic work was gathering information about ReDI, people’s practices, and information about the Korean aid architecture. Everybody here was a great help and answered my questions with much attention, which I am grateful about.
주로 ReDI에서 한 일은 잠시 연구에 참여했고 회의에 참석했으며, 몇몇 동료들에게 번역 문제를 도와주었습니다. 지속발전연구평가팀이 프로젝트 제안서를 작성하는 데 집중해야 했기 때문에 유감스럽게도 제가 많이 도와드릴 수 없었지만 항상 돕고자 노력했습니다. 팀원들이 제안서를 작성하는 동안 제가 해야 할 일을 진행하고 있었는데, 현재 연구하는 ReDI와 사람들의 관습, 그리고 한국의 원조 기관에 대한 정보를 수집했습니다. 여기 계신 모든 분들이 큰 도움이 되었고 제 질문에 대해 많은 관심을 갖고 그에 대한 답을 해주었습니다.

첫인상과 실제 직접 겪으면서 느낀 점은 무엇입니까?
Arthur My first impression was that I felt a bit lost in this new working environment which is also foreign for me. Over time I could learn how everything works here, the mechanisms and daily practices that make ReDI operates every day, so I found my marks quite easily. Also, everybody was so inclusive and nice that I quickly drew a much clearer picture of ReDI.
처음에는 생소하고 새로운 근무환경에서 약간 손해라고 생각했습니다. 시간이 지나면서 ReDI에서 생활하는 매커니즘과 운영에 대한 전반적인 방법을 배울 수 있었습니다. 그래서 나의 역할을 꽤 쉽게 파악할 수 있었습니다. 또한 모든 사람들이 포괄적이고 친절했기 때문에 ReDI에서 훨씬 빠르고 명확하게 그림을 그릴 수 있었습니다.

돌아가자마자 제일 먼저 하고 싶은 것은 무엇입니까?
Arthur I will finish my master thesis and hopefully get my degree. It is not long before the deadline so all my efforts will be directed to this task, and enjoying Maastricht University and my fellow classmates as much as possible before will all part ways.
저는 석사 학위 논문을 끝내고 학위를 따고 싶습니다. 마감기한이 얼마 남지 않았기 때문에 노력하여 과제를 끝내야 하고, Maastricht 대학과 동료 학우들과 가능한 많이 만나서 즐거운 시간을 보내고 싶습니다.
ReDI ReDI에서 지내신 소감 말씀해주세요.
Arthur Working in this environment enlightened me a lot, and opened my doors of knowledge, making connections that I wouldn’t have made otherwise. It was an amazing experience, both culturally and professionally. I am very grateful to everybody here for being friendly, open-minded, and helpful. I only have positive memories and opinions about my time in this institution.
이 환경에서 일하는 것은 제 지식을 많이 깨우치게 했고, 그 외에 하지 않았던 것을 연결해주었습니다. 그것은 문화적으로나 전문적으로도 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 여기 계신 분들께서 친화적이고 열린 마음으로 도와주셔서 매우 감사했습니다. ReDI에서 보낸 시간들은 저에게 있어 긍정적인 기억과 의견들을 가질 뿐입니다.
ReDI 마지막으로 자신이 생각하는 '국제개발'이란 무엇입니까?
Arthur I would say that international development is about getting together and aiming at changing certain variables of a given context. The direction, tools used and actors involved are precisely what needs to be carefully chosen and what everybody in the development field should focus on.
저는 국제적인 발전이 함께 모여서 특정한 맥락에서 특정한 변수를 바꾸는 것을 목표로 하고 있다고 생각ㅜ합니다. 방향과 사용된 도구, 행위자들은 정확하고 신중하게 선택해야 하며, 개발 분야의 모든 사람들이 집중해야 할 것입니다.
